Randy Flores Just Became the Astros’ GM, and Chaim Bloom’s Own Words Admit How Much the Cardinals Lost

Randy Flores spent eleven years building the best story the Cardinals had going, and the Astros just hired him to run their entire front office instead of just a draft board.

Houston reached into St. Louis’s own front office for this one: the Cardinals official who picked Jordan Walker at No. 21, Masyn Winn at No. 54 and Alec Burleson at No. 70 in the same 2020 draft, the class that still anchors the rebuild.

Chaim Bloom didn’t try to spin this one. On his Sunday KMOX segment, he called Flores “top-shelf all around,” said the Cardinals are sad to see him go, and admitted it’s personal too: fewer chances now to catch up with a guy he’s worked next to for a decade. Ten years of shared history just walked out the door with him.

Bloom’s answer for why St. Louis can absorb it matters more than the soundbite. He pointed to the department-head hires made last offseason to de-layer Flores’s job: Joe Douglas arriving from Pittsburgh as director of pro acquisitions, Zach Mortimer promoted into amateur scouting director. Whether that plan holds is the story to track this winter.

Flores earned this move. Running an entire front office and running a draft room are different jobs, and even Michael Schwab wondered whether Flores’s scouting background translates to managing contracts and trades.

Cardinals fans mourning an assistant GM leaving is not normal fan behavior. That alone says what St. Louis is losing.

Then there’s Ryne Stanek. The Cardinals declined his $6 million option for 2027, making him a free agent the same week they lost the guy who helped build the roster around him. Losing institutional knowledge and bullpen innings in one week is a strange way to open a winter this front office keeps calling a buying window.

Bloom built a plan for exactly this scenario. Now everybody in St. Louis finds out if it was actually built, or just talked about on a Sunday radio hit.
